What does a shooting guard do?

A shooting guard's role can differ depending on the personnel of a given team, but in general they have a few different responsibilities on the court:

- Guard the opposing shooting guard and defend the perimeter.
- Be the secondary ball handler and capable of running the offense and making entry passes.
- Shooting guards' roles on offense differ based on size and skill set. Some SG's like the ball in their hands and try to create their own shots (think Kobe Bryant or Dwayne Wade). Other shooting guards are more jump-shooters who play out on the wing and whose primary function on offense is to come off screens to set up shots (like Ray Allen or JJ Redick).
