Many events of track and field are very basic human movements (running being the most basic, and the foundation of many track events). Children can start "running" safely at a very young age in fun-sized doses.

For actual competition in track & field, and the learning of the more technical events, a child will be best served by a good coach, as these foundational years are often responsible for the formation of very important motor skills for track & field and otherwise. A good youth coach will ensure proper development of technique and steer practices toward technique rather than more stressful modes of training, like weightlifting or anaerobic development. Most youth track clubs begin accepting children from 8 to 10 years of age, so this is probably a good bet if you want to introduce your child to track & field early on. The great thing about track & field for kids is that it can be a foundation for later success in track or in a variety of other sports.
