Hi Christine,

I was able to find several different sources of information which support the idea that pilates can help people recover from a myriad of back problems, herniated discs included. These articles do a good job breaking it down:

http://www.pilates-pro.com/pilates-pro/2008/2/19/anatomy-and-pilates-the-dish-on-disc-problems.html

However, you should definitely consult your doctor before starting a Pilates workout regimen, just to be on the safe side.

Christine -

As long as you are cleared for exercise from your physician, Pilates or other fitness activities can be perfectly safe. Regardless of your activity of choice- make sure to you know what discs (specifically region - cervical, thoracic, lumbar, etc) are in question and what, if any, movements you have been encouraged to avoid by your doctor.

For most people with disc herniation or other back issues an increase in core strength does seem to help to alleviate pain and/or symptoms. Pilates can be a great, low impact, way to help strengthen your core and increase body awareness.

Best practice is to give it a shot and proceed with caution. Make sure the instructor is familiar with your limiting factors and most importantly listen to your body. It's important you feel good during and after the workout.

Good luck!
Jen
