How to become a great outside hitter?

If you want to take your abilities to the next level, footwork is key. You need a solid four-step approach as the setter gets the ball. As the setter sets the ball, first step with your right foot to the outside. By stepping outside, you have more angles to work with, the opposing blocker will have less of an opportunity to come out, and it opens up the middle of the court. Then step with your left foot, right foot, and left foot as you jump. Your third step is your plant step, which prepares you to jump. The fourth step helps you stay balanced as you jump forward.

Here's a drill that hones footwork and technique:

Transition Drill: This drill helps you transition between running and approaching the net.

1) Start at the net, and run to the back line.
2) Run back to the net, and begin your approach at the appropriate time.
3) Have a coach or teammate throw a ball to the hitter that you can either block, spike, or hit back over the net.
4) Repeat for 10-15 sets.

To make the drill harder, you can put some cones on the court (like defenders) that you have run around. You could also have your coach or teammate vary where he or she tosses the ball.
