How expensive are surfboards? If it is my first board, how much should I pay?

I don't surf, but my roommate does and he just bought a used longboard for $150. He mentioned new boards can cost anywhere between $200-450, depending on the quality, size, and brand. It sounds like there's a huge disparity between a generic short board, and a custom-made, name-brand longboard, so it really depends on what you're looking for.
